The tension between busy and seen
As we enter month three of the year, one of my priorities is elevating not just the work, but the people behind it.
Lately I have been reflecting on the tension between being busy and being seen.
Many talented people are doing great work every day. They are shipping projects, solving problems, and moving things forward. But sometimes the thinking behind that work stays hidden. The craft is visible. The perspective is not.
Visibility is where growth begins.
I often say that I chase experience, not titles. Experience comes from exposure. It comes from sharing your thinking, explaining your decisions, and learning how to communicate ideas clearly to different audiences.
Those moments build judgment. They build confidence. They build the ability to move from executing tasks to shaping direction.
This does not happen overnight. It requires repetition. It requires practice. It requires being willing to be uncomfortable.
As leaders, part of our role is designing the conditions that allow people to be seen. That means creating moments in the process where individuals can share their thinking, present their work, and contribute their perspective. Visibility should not depend on personality or luck. It should be part of the system.
For designers earlier in their careers, my advice is simple. Work with your manager to identify those moments of exposure. Look for opportunities to explain your thinking, not just deliver the output.
And I practice this myself.
Writing these weekly reflections is one way I continue to sharpen my own voice and perspective. It forces me to pause, think about what I am observing, and articulate a point of view. Over time, that practice strengthens how I communicate and how I lead.
Growth often starts with being willing to be uncomfortable.
If you trust yourself and keep stepping into those moments, experience accumulates. Perspective sharpens. And eventually the way people see you begins to evolve.
Being seen is not about attention.
It is about growth.
Keep learning.
Keep growing.
Have a great week.
